College History

This beautiful college is located in the sacred city of Malwa -- Sri Muktsar Sahib. This city witnessed the glorious and emotional reunion between the benevolent Guru Gobind Singh Ji and his devout forty disciples who had earlier left him by writing their 'Bedawa' (letter of parting). They redeemed it and sacrificed their lives in the service of their Guru. This holy land is known for being the hub of religious fairs and cultural activities. It was also known as an economically and academically backward area but everything changed 71 years ago with the opening of the Government College Sri Muktsar Sahib in 1951.
The College was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sh. Gopi Chand Bharghava on June 3 1951. It was a path-breaking venture with far reaching effects. The college made a very modest beginning in a rented building of Gurdwara Tibbi Sahib. The College initially had B.A. and B.Sc. (Non-Medical) courses. The College shifted to the present campus on October 3, 1967. The three year graduate courses B.Sc. (Medical) and B.Com were introduced in the year 1967 and 1978 respectively. M.A. Economics and M.A. Political Science were introduced in 1970 and 1973 respectively. The Arts Block was commissioned in 1973-74. Due to the increasing number of students in the College a new Physical Education department was inaugurated on 27.11.2006. A new building Bhai Maha Singh block was constructed at the cost of about one crore. In this building one hall, four departments and ten class rooms are available. This new academic building, Bhai Maha Singh Block was inaugurated in the year 2008. The RUSA Block was dedicated to the students in the year 2021-22.It contains three classrooms, one seminar hall and a beautiful staff room.
Today with a seven decade old legacy and an environment friendly campus spread over 40 acres and an enrolment of nearly 2200 students, the institution stands as a lighthouse of knowledge for the region. The internationally acclaimed Guru Gobind Singh Stadium is also the pride of this College. The Higher Education Institute Society was formed in the College during the academic session 2013-14. As per the requirements of the present time in the year 2014 M.Sc. (Mathematics), B.C.A. and P.G.D.C.A., self finance courses were started with the special efforts of Panjab University Senator Prof. Raghbir Dayal. New Courses B.B.A. and B.Sc. (Agriculture) were started in the year 2016. The results of the College are excellent every year due to the able leadership of highly educated, hardworking and intelligent staff. Old Students Association and Parent Teacher Association contribute to the smooth running of Academic and Administrative work. The college has contributed to the educational, cultural, political and social development of not only Sri Muktsar Sahib but also the state and country. The contribution to sports is of extensive and long standing nature having produced great sportsmen and sportswomen for India. .
